In 2010, soldiers detained a 14-year-old boy nicknamed 'El Ponchis' who claimed he was kidnapped at age 11 and forced to work for the Cartel of the South Pacific, a branch of the splintered Beltran Leyva gang. Unfortunately, Mexico is no stranger to child killers and this is not the first case of a young boy getting arrested for committing heinous crimes. It is not uncommon for drug gangs to kill rivals who are selling drugs on their territory, or people who owe them money. While the adults were taken to the Neza-Bordo Penitentiary and Social Reintegration Center, the 14-year-old was placed at the disposal of a specialized control judge in the Comprehensive Criminal Justice System for Adolescents. It has not yet been made public what the motive behind the killings was, but drug gangs in Mexico frequently dabble in kidnapping and contract killing. Another man, known as El Nono, was arrested in connection with the shooting, while seven others gang members were charged with drug-related crimes.
